Nuevo León records second human screwworm (myiasis) case

The Federal Health Secretariat confirmed a second case of human myiasis caused by the screwworm fly in the state of Nuevo León, reported in the epidemiological week 21 bulletin. The new patient, a man, joins the state's earlier case, bringing Nuevo León’s total to two confirmed infections for 2026.

Nationwide, Mexico has recorded 397 confirmed human screwworm cases, with two fatalities—one in Oaxaca and another in Yucatán. The most affected states are Chiapas (137 cases) and Veracruz (66 cases). Health authorities have urged increased epidemiological surveillance and advised the public to keep wounds clean, avoid insect exposure, and seek prompt medical attention for any signs of infection.
