Nuremberg student protests against conscription cause traffic disruptions

On Friday, 8 May, students in Nuremberg staged two demonstrations to protest Germany's mandatory military service. The first march ran from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. along a route that included Maxtor, Maxtorgraben, Rathenauplatz and Cramer‑Klett‑Park. A second march took place from 12:15 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., covering a longer stretch through Cramer‑Klett‑Park, Rathenauplatz, Sulzbacher Straße, Martin‑Richter‑Straße and several other streets before returning to Cramer‑Klett‑Park.

Police warned that the rallies could lead to road closures and significant traffic delays, especially on the second route. Drivers were asked to follow police instructions and use alternative routes where possible. The protests are part of a nationwide series of school strikes against the conscription law, marking the third such action on the symbolic date of Victory in Europe Day.

Organisers link the conscription issue to broader concerns about war and fascism, urging students to skip school as a form of civil disobedience.
