Nursing training sees growth in Saxony-Anhalt and new initiatives in Upper Austria

In Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, the nursing profession is seeing a significant rise in trainees. In 2025, 1,899 individuals signed new apprenticeship contracts for nursing specialists, marking a 19.2 percent increase compared to the previous year. By the end of 2025, nearly 4,900 people were enrolled in nursing training in the region, with women making up approximately three-quarters of the trainees. This growth is supported by increased compensation; average monthly salaries for full-time apprentices rose to 1,371 euros in the first year, 1,446 euros in the second, and 1,559 euros in the third.

In Upper Austria, a new initiative called #CareKickstart has been launched to address the shortage of skilled workers. This three-year program is designed for students as young as 15 who have completed compulsory schooling. The training, which begins in Linz, focuses on social care for the elderly, covering areas such as nursing assistance, daily companionship, and active training. Participants attend classes four days a week, allowing time for practical application.
