East Nusa Tenggara earthquake kills 47 people
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, centered in Nagekeo Regency. As of Saturday evening, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the death toll has reached 47 people.
Casualties are distributed across several regencies, including 24 deaths in Manggarai, 17 in East Manggarai, 3 in Sikka, 1 in Ngada, and 1 in Ende. The earthquake has caused significant structural damage, destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and numerous public facilities, including 87 educational buildings and 18 health facilities.
In response, government officials, including BNPB Head Suharyanto and Coordinating Minister Pratikno, have traveled to the affected areas to oversee emergency operations. BNPB is deploying emergency response teams, logistics, and equipment, including a helicopter to assist with mobilization in the island-heavy region. Aid efforts include the dispatch of 50,000 relief packages totaling 275 tons to the disaster zone.
