NUST addresses medical laboratory sciences programme crisis
The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) is implementing measures to address a crisis within its Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences programme. The issues involve accreditation challenges, inadequate laboratory facilities, professional supervision deficits, and limited capacity for Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), which is essential for professional registration.
Education Minister Sanet Steenkamp acknowledged administrative oversight regarding student admissions, noting that the university admitted 150 students for 2025—the largest intake since the programme's inception in 2008. This surge placed significant pressure on practical training capacity.
NUST is currently engaging affected students on an individual basis to discuss academic pathways, including potential transfers to other programmes or partner institutions. The university is also negotiating with independent laboratories to secure additional practical training placements. Financial arrangements and written case updates will be communicated to students following consultations with the Namibia Qualifications Authority. The university has also made psychosocial support available to students during this period.
