NUST medical laboratory sciences programme crisis
Overview
The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) is managing a crisis within its Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences programme caused by accreditation and capacity constraints. A record intake of 150 students for the 2025 cohort exceeded the university’s ability to provide necessary laboratory resources, practical training facilities, and professional supervision for work-integrated learning (WIL).
To comply with Health Professions Council of Namibia (HPCNA) mandates, the university has selected 50 students for placement based on academic progression. Education Minister Sanet Steenkamp has called for increased transparency regarding the challenges and academic options for those affected.
NUST is currently engaging students individually to discuss academic pathways, including potential transfers to other programmes or institutions within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The university is also negotiating with independent laboratories to secure additional training placements and has provided psychosocial support to students during the transition.
