Nutrition experts discuss protein trends and dietary needs
The food industry has seen a significant rise in protein-infused products, ranging from snacks and candy to beverages. While protein is a vital macronutrient for muscle building, cell repair, and immune function, experts suggest that the current obsession may overshadow other nutritional needs.
Nutritionists note that while protein is essential for maintaining body structure, many foods commonly perceived as high-protein may not meet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's criteria of containing 20% or more of the daily value. Experts suggest that dietary fiber is an emerging nutritional priority that many people may actually need more of.
Daily protein requirements vary based on age, activity level, and body size, but some specialists recommend between 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight to help preserve muscle and bone density as people age.
