Nutrition experts discuss the role of carbohydrates in a healthy diet

Nutrition experts are clarifying the role of carbohydrates in human health, noting that while they often suffer from a negative reputation as weight-gain triggers, they are essential for bodily functions. Nutritionist Matthias Riedl describes carbohydrates as ‘fuel for the engine,’ providing a readily available energy source that digestive enzymes break down into glucose to power the brain, muscles, and organs.

Claudia Müller of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) states that carbohydrates are the most important nutrient in terms of quantity, suggesting that more than half of daily calories should come from them. The impact of carbohydrates depends heavily on their type, categorized by the number of sugar molecules they contain:

• Monosaccharides (single sugars): Such as glucose and fructose, found in fruit and honey. • Disaccharides (double sugars): Such as sucrose (table sugar), maltose, and lactose. • Complex carbohydrates: Including starches and certain fibers, which provide different nutritional benefits compared to simple sugars.
