Nutrition experts promote healthy eating and food quality standards
Nutrition specialists and consumer organizations are providing guidance to improve dietary habits and food selection. In Spain, the Asociación Española de Consumidores released a guide for World Bread Day to help citizens identify high-quality bakery products in large supermarkets. The guide advises consumers to look beyond labels like ‘artisan’ or ‘sourdough’ and instead analyze main ingredients, fermentation processes, and the relative price per kilogram to distinguish between refined and whole-grain flours.
In Peru, during World Food Day celebrations in Ayacucho, nutritionists emphasized the importance of consuming local, natural, and seasonal products to combat the rise of ultra-processed foods. Experts highlighted a triple burden of malnutrition, including nutrient deficiencies and excessive weight. Data from the 2024 Demographic and Health Survey (ENDES) indicates significant nutritional challenges, noting that 43.7% of children aged 6 to 35 months in Peru suffer from anemia, with prevalence reaching 51% in the Ayacucho region.
