Nutrition experts provide guidance on protein selection for heart health

Nutrition experts and recent scientific reviews offer guidance on selecting healthier protein sources to support heart health and satiety.

Dietitian Sarah Anzlovar suggests prioritizing proteins such as poultry, lean beef, pork, eggs, fish, and plant-based options like tofu and legumes to maintain stable blood sugar and long-lasting fullness. She also recommends adding vegetables to restaurant meals to increase fiber and micronutrient intake.

A scientific review published in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics journal highlights that replacing red meat with poultry can lower the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Lead author David Goldmen notes that poultry contains less saturated fat and heme iron compared to red meat. Additionally, unprocessed poultry avoids nitrates and nitrites found in processed meats, which have been linked to cardiovascular issues and potential carcinogenic effects.
