Nutritional benefits of plums and staple carbohydrates

Medical experts and nutritional guidelines highlight the specific health benefits of various seasonal fruits and staple foods. Endocrinologist Andra Naku notes that plums are an excellent autumn fruit for digestive health due to their high fiber content and the presence of sorbitol, which can aid intestinal peristalsis. Plums also provide antioxidants like polyphenols and anthocyanins, as well as vitamins C, K, and potassium. However, Naku advises that individuals monitoring blood glucose levels should be mindful of dried plums, as they contain more concentrated natural sugars and calories than fresh ones.

Regarding staple carbohydrates, dietary guidelines suggest that whole grain versions of rice and pasta are superior to highly processed varieties because they offer more fiber and nutrients, leading to longer satiety. While rice is a global staple, its production is water-intensive, and concerns exist regarding natural arsenic levels in some crops. Brown rice and parboiled rice are noted as more nutritious alternatives to white rice. Similarly, whole grain pasta provides a higher concentration of vitamins and minerals compared to refined options.
