Nutritional guidance on Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D intake

Nutritional experts highlight the importance of maintaining adequate levels of Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D for long-term health.

Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal products such as meat, eggs, and dairy. While some plant-based sources like spirulina are marketed as alternatives, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) warns that these may not effectively support the body's needs and can even hinder absorption. A severe deficiency in B12 can lead to serious health issues, including paralysis, eye damage, or dementia.

Vitamin D is essential for bone health and the immune system. While the body produces approximately 80 to 90 percent of its required Vitamin D through sunlight exposure, dietary intake accounts for the remaining 10 to 20 percent. In regions like Germany, insufficient sunlight during winter months can deplete stored reserves. According to the DGE, blood test levels below 30 nmol/l indicate a deficiency, which can result in weakened bones and muscle pain.
