Nutritional requirements and vitamin supplementation during pregnancy

During pregnancy, nutritional requirements increase to support maternal physical changes and fetal development. While a balanced diet often meets these needs, experts suggest that certain nutrients may require targeted supplementation.

According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), folate and iodine are nutrients that typically require specific supplementation. Other nutrients that may be beneficial if a deficiency is identified include iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins D and B12.

Folate plays a critical role in metabolic processes, including cell division, cell growth, and blood formation. It is found naturally in foods such as green vegetables, legumes, and whole grain products, while folic acid is the industrially produced form used in supplements. Medical professionals recommend that pregnant individuals consult with doctors or midwives to determine individual needs, often through blood tests to check for deficiencies.
