Nutritionists advise on choosing quality whole grain bread

Nutritionists and academics advise that a “multigrain” label does not automatically guarantee a healthier bread option. The nutritional value depends on whether the grains used are whole or refined.

Whole grains contain the germ, endosperm, and bran, making them rich in fiber, B vitamins, and minerals. In contrast, refined grains have the bran and germ removed, resulting in a loss of essential nutrients. Experts suggest checking the ingredient list on product packaging, as ingredients are listed by weight from highest to lowest. A healthier choice typically features whole wheat flour or oats as the first ingredient, rather than enriched wheat flour.

To ensure better quality, consumers should look for products containing at least three grams of fiber per slice and less than three grams of added sugar per slice. Some high-quality products may also specify that at least 50 percent of the ingredients are whole grains.
