Nvidia to acquire AI platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion

Nvidia has announced an agreement to acquire the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for approximately $12.93 billion. The deal is structured to include roughly $11.9 billion for stockholders and up to $1 billion in equity-based retention awards for employees. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approvals.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. He stated that developers will not be required to use Nvidia computing hardware to build or deploy models on the platform, allowing for continued choice in models, frameworks, and cloud providers. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue confirmed that the company's three founders and the entire team will join Nvidia.

The acquisition positions Nvidia at the center of the open-source AI movement, providing direct access to a platform that hosts over 3 million AI models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications. This move is seen as a strategic effort to diversify Nvidia's influence beyond hardware and to compete with proprietary AI developers like OpenAI and Anthropic by supporting more cost-effective, open-weight alternatives.
