Nvidia-branded trailers stolen in California contain only sand
Thieves in California targeted two trailers branded with Nvidia and PlusAI logos, expecting to steal high-value artificial intelligence hardware such as GPUs. However, the thieves discovered the trailers contained only approximately 40,000 pounds of sand.
PlusAI, an autonomous trucking startup that partners with Nvidia, uses the sand as simulated ballast to mimic heavy freight loads during research and development testing. The trailers were stolen from a facility in Newark and later recovered near another company’s office after being abandoned by the thieves.
While the trailers were taken, the high-tech truck cabs and actual autonomous driving equipment remained untouched inside the warehouse. The Fremont Police Department is investigating the incident, though no arrests have been made. The theft highlights a growing trend of organized crime targeting expensive AI and data center equipment, with cargo theft values rising significantly in recent years.
