Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang spearheads Open Weights AI coalition

A coalition of 25 technology companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, IBM and others, issued a joint statement titled “Open Weights and American AI Leadership.” The letter, fronted by Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, argues that the United States should focus on building a strong, open AI ecosystem rather than pursuing model supremacy. It positions open‑weight models as a way to spread AI capabilities across sectors and challenges proposals to restrict open models, especially those from China.

Cline founder Saoud Rizwan echoed the shift, claiming that traditional open‑source software is “dead” but that open‑weight AI models offer a cost‑effective future that can revive openness while countering proprietary AI dominance. Rizwan emphasizes the economic and community benefits of cheaper, openly available AI models.

Both perspectives highlight a broader debate on AI sovereignty, ecosystem leadership, and the future of open source in the age of advanced artificial intelligence.
