Nvidia CEO Leads Open‑Weight AI Coalition

In early July 2026 Jensen Huang called on firms to build domain‑specific “super agents” on open frameworks and stressed responsible AI. By 23 July he unveiled a coalition of more than 25 U.S. technology companies—including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Dell, Palantir, Mistral AI, Hugging Face, Mozilla, the Linux Foundation, Andreessen Horowitz and Y Combinator—via an open letter titled “Open Weights and American AI Leadership,” urging Congress and regulators to avoid “premature restrictions” on open‑weight models that can be downloaded, inspected and run on private infrastructure.

On 26 July Huang reiterated the plea, likening the effort to the 1980s open‑software movement and receiving public backing from Elon Musk. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also voiced support, calling open source essential for a healthy AI ecosystem. The coalition argues that open models boost competition, lower costs, improve security through transparency, and preserve U.S. technological sovereignty. Their stance contrasts with lobbying by OpenAI and Anthropic for tighter controls on Chinese models such as Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House science adviser Michael Kratsios, and the Trump administration have weighed possible executive actions, underscoring a philosophical split in Silicon Valley between proponents of open‑source AI to drive cloud and chip demand and advocates of closed, proprietary systems concerned with safety and IP risks.
