NVIDIA to launch DLSS 5 on September 3 with NBA 2K27
NVIDIA has announced the official launch of DLSS 5, scheduled for September 3, 2026. The technology will debut in the game NBA 2K27 and is designed for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and GeForce NOW subscribers.
DLSS 5 introduces 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, a system that uses AI to enhance lighting, textures, and material details—such as skin, hair, and foliage—on top of the existing game engine output. Unlike previous versions focused on upscaling or frame generation, this model aims for photorealism by simulating how light interacts with surfaces. NVIDIA emphasizes that the technology is deterministic and provides developers with granular control through masks and intensity settings to preserve artistic intent.
The announcement follows significant controversy and leaks. Early access files from NBA 2K27 allowed modders to test the technology on older RTX 20 and 30 series hardware, though results were inconsistent and often accompanied by heavy performance penalties. Some users criticized the AI-generated visuals as looking artificial or like “AI slop,” while others praised the increased realism. NVIDIA has addressed these concerns by highlighting the tools available to developers to prevent the AI from overriding original artistic visions.
