Nvidia microcomputers found in autonomous Russian drones
Ukrainian investigators and forensic experts have identified Nvidia Jetson Orin microcomputers within the wreckage of Russian drones used in recent combat operations. These components were reportedly used in drones tested in the Zaporizhzhia region between May and July to facilitate autonomous target identification and selection.
Technically, the integration of these chips represents a shift from assistance-based AI to fully autonomous decision-making. Previously, AI in drones was primarily used in the final stages of flight to counter radio jamming, requiring a ‘human-in-the-loop’ to confirm a target. The new systems appear to allow the on-device computer to make strike decisions independently, earlier in the flight process.
Nvidia has stated that the Jetson Orin is a consumer-grade product designed for civilian robotics, machine vision, and development, rather than military applications. While the chips are not officially sold in Russia, they are available through secondary markets where the company has no direct control over sales. Human rights organizations have expressed opposition to the use of autonomous systems capable of selecting and attacking targets without human intervention.
