Western AI components in Russian missile systems
Overview
Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) has identified Western high-tech components within Russian missile systems. Initially, intelligence reported finding an Nvidia Jetson Orin computing module inside the wreckage of a Russian S-71 Monochrome cruise missile, an air-launched weapon designed for the Su-57 stealth fighter. Experts noted the module could enable machine-vision terminal guidance for autonomous target identification.
Subsequent analysis specified the component as an Nvidia Jetson Orin NX module located within the S-71M ‘Monochrome’ variant. Unlike the S-71K ‘Kover’ which targets fixed coordinates, the S-71M reportedly functions as a hybrid between a cruise missile and loitering munitions, using the module for real-time searching and autonomous target recognition.
Nvidia responded to the findings by stating the Jetson Orin NX is a “consumer-grade product intended for developers and entrepreneurs, not designed for military purposes.” The company clarified it does not commercialize products in Russia and indicated it would take measures if it identified customers violating US export controls, noting that such modules are difficult to track once sold through secondary markets or resellers.
