Rapid growth in artificial‑intelligence workloads is driving an unprecedented rise in data‑center electricity consumption. The International Energy Agency projects that global data‑center power use will double by 2030, and Gartner predicts a 26 % increase in 2026 alone, with AI‑optimized servers accounting for nearly one‑third of total data‑center electricity demand. In the United States, projected AI‑related power needs could climb from 4 GW in 2024 to 123 GW by 2035, while the United Kingdom faces similar grid‑capacity bottlenecks as new AI clusters push transformer and transmission systems to their limits.
The surge is prompting a scramble for cooling solutions and renewable power. Companies such as Vertiv, a leader in liquid‑cooling systems, have seen stock gains of more than 60 % year‑to‑date as data‑center builders seek to keep increasingly hot AI chips operating safely. Major tech firms are also buying renewable energy through power‑purchase agreements, with Meta and AWS reporting 100 % renewable electricity for their data‑center fleets and investing in solar and wind projects worldwide. At the same time, concerns grow about the carbon footprint of AI, as data‑center electricity use approaches that of the world's sixth‑largest electricity consumer and could emit roughly 400 million metric tonnes of CO₂ annually.
These trends highlight a widening infrastructure gap: while investments pour into AI chips, models and edge devices, essential power‑grid upgrades, high‑voltage cabling, and cooling capacity lag behind, threatening to throttle AI deployment unless addressed through coordinated upgrades and greener energy sourcing.
