O Porriño demands undergrounding of new high-voltage power line
The municipality of O Porriño has formally rejected the proposed aerial route for the new 220 kV ‘Atios-Pazos de Borbén’ high-voltage power line promoted by Red Eléctrica de España. Mayor Alejandro Lorenzo submitted a series of objections to the Department of Economy and Industry, demanding that the 1.89-kilometer section passing through the municipality be fully underground.
The local administration argues that the current aerial design is discriminatory, noting that neighboring municipalities like Mos and Vigo have approximately 13 kilometers of the line planned for underground installation.
Furthermore, the Council raised significant environmental concerns regarding water resources. The proposed aerial route reportedly impacts 17 groundwater extraction points used for human consumption within a 100-meter radius of the towers. Specifically, the ‘Carreira 2’ extraction point is located within the temporary construction zone. The municipality claims the promoter selected an option recognized in studies as having poor hydrological impact without conducting a specific hydrogeological analysis to ensure the safety of the local water supply.
