Opposition to Red Eléctrica de España power line project

Overview

Local municipalities and resident groups in Galicia are opposing a high-voltage power line project promoted by Red Eléctrica de España. The project is intended to secure electricity supply for the Stellantis factory.

In O Porriño, the local administration rejected the proposed aerial route for the 220 kV ‘Atios-Pazos de Borbén’ line, demanding that the 1.89-kilometer section passing through the municipality be moved underground. Officials argued the aerial design is discriminatory compared to neighboring municipalities and raised concerns that the route impacts 17 groundwater extraction points used for human consumption.

Similarly, in Bembrive, the ‘Bembrive en Pé’ association and the BNG political group filed over 1,500 objections against the 21-kilometer route. Opponents claim the 15 planned towers will damage 24 hectares of woodland, the Eifonso river, and local water sources. The municipality of Mos has also joined the opposition, citing risks to protected assets and underground water resources.
