OABRJ launches campaign against fake lawyer scam in Rio de Janeiro
The Brazilian Bar Association, Rio de Janeiro section (OABRJ), has launched an awareness campaign following more than 2,000 reports of a 'fake lawyer' scam. The fraud involves criminals impersonating legal professionals to deceive individuals awaiting judicial outcomes.
Scammers often use public information from court processes to target victims, requesting urgent payments or Pix transfers via unknown phone numbers. OABRJ President Ana Tereza Basilio advised the public to distrust any urgent financial requests from unrecognized contacts and to verify all communications through established channels with their actual lawyers.
In collaboration with the Brazilian Institute for Legal Research and Education (Ibrapej), the OABRJ has distributed educational materials at the Carioca Metro station to highlight warning signs and prevention methods. The organization is also supporting legislation to criminalize this specific type of fraud and is requesting that the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice restrict access to certain procedural information to mitigate these risks.
