OAS calls for renewal of Gang Suppression Force mandate in Haiti
The 32 active member states of the Organization of American States (OAS) have issued a joint declaration calling on the United Nations Security Council to renew the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti. The member states are also urging the international community to provide the necessary personnel, funding, equipment, and logistical support to ensure the force's full and sustained deployment.
OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin emphasized that a mandate alone is insufficient to achieve results; the mission requires concrete resources to help Haitian authorities regain territorial control, restore access to critical infrastructure, and improve public security. Key operational priorities include supporting the Haitian National Police and Armed Forces, securing the country's airport and port, and reopening major transport routes.
The declaration also highlights the need to combat arms trafficking and the financial networks supporting gangs. Furthermore, the OAS linked the improvement of security conditions to the preparation for future elections in Haiti, stressing the importance of voter registration and electoral logistics. The member states reaffirmed their respect for Haiti's sovereignty and emphasized that solutions must be led by Haitians in coordination with partners like the UN and CARICOM.
