Oaxaca and Chiapas agree to resolve Chimalapas territorial tensions
Authorities from Oaxaca and Chiapas have reached agreements to mitigate tensions regarding territorial disputes in the Chimalapas region. During a high-level meeting involving federal representatives and security forces from the National Guard, Secretariat of Defense, and Secretariat of the Navy, officials agreed to respect established territorial boundaries and abide by rulings from the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.
To prevent confrontations, security in contested zones will be managed by federal institutions. This follows reports of alleged incursions by Chiapas security forces into Oaxacan territory. The agreement reaffirms a 2012 inter-institutional understanding with the Mexican government to resolve agrarian differences through legal and institutional channels.
Separately, the Oaxaca state government reported a broader success in conflict resolution, noting that 57 peace agreements have been reached across the state to settle various agrarian disputes. Notable resolutions include ending a 51-year dispute between San Juan Guelavía and Magdalena Teitipac, as well as a 26-year conflict between El Carrizo and Los Pocitos.
