Oaxaca-Chiapas Chimalapas territorial dispute
Overview
A long-standing land dispute in the Zoque region between San Miguel Chimalapa in Oaxaca and several ejidos in Chiapas has moved toward formal resolution efforts.
Initially, Eliezer Gutiérrez, president of the Comisariado de Bienes Comunales of San Miguel Chimalapa, proposed a conciliation plan to address the conflict, which dates back to 1967. The plan suggested that Chiapas settlers be recognized as comuneros of San Miguel Chimalapa to ensure respect for communal statutes and forest protection, rather than resorting to forced evictions.
Following these efforts, authorities from Oaxaca and Chiapas, alongside federal representatives from the National Guard, Secretariat of Defense, and Secretariat of the Navy, reached agreements to mitigate tensions. The parties agreed to respect established territorial boundaries and abide by Mexican Supreme Court rulings. To prevent confrontations and address reports of security force incursions, security in the contested zones will be managed by federal institutions.
