Mexico southeast blackout caused by high-tension line vandalism
A massive power outage affected the Mexican states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Chiapas following acts of vandalism against high-tension electrical infrastructure. The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) reported that the disruption was caused by damage to the insulators of two 400 kV transmission lines.
The outage began around 8:00 PM on Monday and lasted approximately seven hours in several areas. The blackout impacted residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, including parts of Cancún and Mérida. In Mérida, the loss of power reportedly caused traffic signal failures.
CFE specialized personnel worked through the night to repair the damaged components and replace insulators. By the early hours of Tuesday, the company confirmed that power supply had been fully restored to 100 percent of the affected users. Authorities are conducting investigations to identify those responsible for the vandalism.
