Oaxaca sea turtle nesting season sees massive egg counts

Sea turtle nesting seasons are underway along the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, with significant activity reported at key protected sites. At the Morro Ayuta Beach Sanctuary, authorities recovered 9,500 olive ridley turtle eggs that had been improperly stored in sacks within coastal dunes; these eggs were deemed non-viable and buried. Additionally, officials protected 82 leatherback turtle eggs that were relocated for incubation.

At Playa Escobilla, a protected area managed by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP), the reproductive season has seen massive concentrations of olive ridley turtles. Reports indicate that over 113,000 turtles and more than one million eggs have been recorded during the early weeks of the season.

Conservation efforts involve coordination between Profepa, the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), and the National Guard to monitor nesting sites. Despite population recoveries, species face ongoing threats from illegal egg extraction, fishing bycatch, pollution, and climate change.
