Oaxaca stages Zapotec‑inspired show “El Mundo Mágico de los Binnigulaza”
The multidisciplinary production “El Mundo Mágico de los Binnigulaza,” directed by Oaxacan artist Sergio Santamaría, opened on 9 July at the historic Teatro Macedonio Alcalá. The show blends contemporary dance, theater, jazz, pre‑Hispanic music, and animal‑mask visuals to retell the Zapotec legend of the Binnigulaza ancestors.
The performance features live musicians, a children’s choir from the Guadalupe Hinojosa de Murat primary school, and contributions from local creators such as choreographer Laura Vera and lighting designer Marco Antonio Sánchez Reyes. Funding and support come from the Fundación Chocolate Mayordomo, the Gobierno de Oaxaca’s cultural secretariat, and the state’s public broadcaster CORTV. The season will continue with shows on 17 July and 30 July, with tickets on sale at the theatre box office from 6 July.
