Obesity and diabetes linked to higher cardiovascular risks

Recent medical studies have highlighted the significant impact of obesity and lifestyle factors on cardiovascular outcomes for patients with diabetes.

A SWEDEHEART analysis of over 124,000 patients in Sweden found that individuals with both class 3 obesity (BMI ≥40 kg/m²) and diabetes face substantially higher risks following a myocardial infarction. Over a six-year follow-up period, this group experienced more than twice the risk of all-cause mortality and a 91% higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) compared to those with normal BMI and no diabetes. Severe obesity was specifically linked to increased rates of heart failure and kidney complications.

In a separate study involving UK Biobank data, researchers examined how lifestyle adherence affects adults with type 2 diabetes. The findings suggest that following a Mediterranean lifestyle—characterized by specific dietary patterns, adequate sleep, regular physical activity, and social connections—is associated with a reduced risk of MACE and cardiovascular mortality. This research is particularly relevant as global type 2 diabetes prevalence is projected to rise significantly by 2050.
