Ocaña declares public calamity following heavy rains and landslides
The municipality of Ocaña in Norte de Santander, Colombia, has extended its declaration of public calamity to address emergencies caused by atypical rainfall and climate variability. The decision by the Municipal Council for Risk Management and Disaster Response aims to facilitate the transfer of resources to protect both urban and rural populations.
Heavy rains starting October 29 have caused significant flooding, landslides, and traffic congestion. Emergency teams and local authorities have been deployed to critical sectors, including Venecia, Los Arales, Los Almendros, and Libardo Alonso. In the Santa Lucía sector, flooding occurred due to blocked drainage systems and sedimentation, alongside the collapse of a small wall.
In the Los Arales neighborhood, the weather exposed a potable water pipe, requiring immediate intervention by public service workers. Emergency responders are currently conducting a census of those affected, clearing debris with heavy machinery, and preparing humanitarian aid. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid crossing water currents and to follow official safety instructions.
