Oceanogràfic beluga Jelly Bean dies after rescue from Marineland Canada
Jelly Bean, a beluga whale rescued from the shuttered Marineland Canada, has died suddenly at the Oceanogràfic in Valencia, Spain. The death occurred while the whale was under 24-hour veterinary supervision following a recent relocation.
Jelly Bean arrived in Valencia on August 27 as part of an international operation to relocate whales and dolphins from the inactive Canadian park to various facilities in Spain and the United States. In the days leading up to her death, the whale had reportedly experienced feeding difficulties, though veterinarians noted intermittent signs of improvement.
The cause of death is currently unknown. Veterinarians at the Oceanogràfic plan to conduct a necropsy in collaboration with pathologists from CEU Cardenal Herrera University to determine the contributing factors.
This incident marks the third death among belugas involved in the Marineland relocation efforts; two other belugas previously died following their move to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Other animals from the same rescue group, including a beluga named Cleopatra and four dolphins, are reportedly in stable condition and continuing their adaptation process.
