OCHA provides urgent aid to 18,000 displaced families in Yemen
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that approximately 18,000 displaced families on Yemen’s West Coast have received urgent humanitarian assistance. The announcement followed a meeting in Aden between OCHA Deputy Director Peter Eichrodt and Yemen’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Mokhtar al-Yafie.
The humanitarian response follows a multi-stage mechanism that includes immediate relief within 72 hours, followed by cash assistance, shelter services, and specialized sectoral support. OCHA is also working to organize and update data regarding the displaced populations.
Minister al-Yafie stated that Houthi military escalations have worsened the humanitarian situation and increased the burden on host communities. He called for intensified international cooperation and announced plans to form an emergency committee to serve as a unified government coordination point for humanitarian partners.
The aid comes amid renewed military clashes between government forces and Houthi fighters in provinces including Taiz, Marib, Al Jawf, Al Bayda, and Lahj. Recent fighting has seen Houthi forces gain control of strategic locations in Hodeidah and Taiz, including the city of Mocha and Perim Island near the Bab al-Mandab strait.
