OCI summit in Jeddah addresses Palestinian statehood and leadership

During the 23rd extraordinary session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OCI) Foreign Ministers Council in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, member nations reaffirmed their positions on the Palestinian conflict.

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf expressed Algeria's unwavering support for the Palestinian people, condemning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the situation in the West Bank. He criticized the failure to maintain a ceasefire, attributing the deadlock to the actions of Israeli authorities.

Representing Senegal, Minister Cheikh Niang advocated for the creation of an independent and viable Palestinian State that can coexist in peace with Israel in accordance with international law.

The summit also saw the unanimous election of Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, a former Mauritanian Foreign Minister, as the new Secretary-General of the OCI. He succeeds Hissein Brahim Taha, whose term ends in November.
