OIC extraordinary session in Jeddah

Overview

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held its 23rd extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The summit focused on the Palestinian cause, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, developments in Jerusalem, and the Israeli E1 settlement project in the West Bank.

During the session, member nations reaffirmed their support for Palestinian statehood. Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan described settlement projects as a “direct threat to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state,” while Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf criticized the failure to maintain a ceasefire. Senegal’s Minister Cheikh Niang advocated for a viable Palestinian state capable of coexisting with Israel under international law.

The summit also resulted in the unanimous election of Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as the new Secretary-General. Ahmed, a former Mauritanian Foreign Minister with extensive UN experience, will succeed Hussein Ibrahim Taha.
