OCU warns of summer vacation online scams targeting bookings

The Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) has warned that the summer holiday period sees a surge in digital fraud, as travelers book accommodations and travel services from mobile devices. Five common scams are identified: (1) fake vacation rentals advertised with stolen photos and low prices, (2) fraudulent websites that closely imitate Booking.com or Airbnb, (3) messages that impersonate a real reservation and request a new payment, (4) offers of free flights or train tickets that lead to phishing sites, and (5) false traffic‑fine notices that demand immediate payment.

According to the Bank of Spain, fraudulent electronic payments – including phishing and smishing – generate losses of around €500 million each year. EU consumer law states that a payment obtained through deception is invalid, and the bank must reimburse the victim unless it can prove serious client negligence. The OCU advises consumers to avoid opening links from unknown senders, distrust unusually low offers or urgent‑action messages, and always verify communications through official channels, remembering that no legitimate company asks for full banking details via phone, email or SMS.
