Odisha and Andhra Pradesh escalate border presence in Kotia
Tensions have intensified between the Indian states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh over the disputed Kotia panchayat in the Koraput district. Following Odisha's establishment of three police check posts at Neridivalasa, Talasembi, and Phatuseneri (or Haramandingi Chhak) to monitor movement and prevent unauthorized entry, the Andhra Pradesh government responded by deploying police personnel and establishing an outpost in the region.
The security buildup occurs amid concerns regarding upcoming Mandal and Zilla Parishad elections in Andhra Pradesh. Reports indicate that Andhra Pradesh police have been seen in plain clothes at a church in Uparasembi, and intermediaries are allegedly working to facilitate voter access.
While Odisha officials state the deployment is a precautionary measure to maintain law and order, the increased presence has caused apprehension among local residents. Some villagers have expressed concerns that the security measures could restrict their movement and electoral participation, with some reportedly threatening to boycott future elections if their rights are hindered.
