South Asia weather alert: Heavy rain and landslide risks across 18 states
A well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and an active monsoon trough are triggering widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across approximately 18 to 19 states in South Asia.
In India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for several regions. Odisha is facing significant risks, with a red warning for Bargarh and orange warnings for ten other districts. Heavy rainfall in Odisha and parts of West Bengal, such as East and West Medinipur and Jhargram, is expected to cause waterlogging and potential flooding. In the northern mountainous regions, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir, there is a high risk of landslides and mudslides.
In Pakistan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across northern regions, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, with the system expected to remain active through September 6.
Across the affected areas, wind speeds are expected to reach between 40 and 80 kmph. Authorities have advised fishermen to stay off the sea due to rough conditions and have warned residents in low-lying areas to prepare for flash floods and urban flooding.
