Bay of Bengal depression brings heavy rain alerts to Odisha and eastern India
A low‑pressure area over the north‑west Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on 26 July and is moving toward the Odisha‑West Bengal coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Dhenkanal and Angul districts, along with orange and yellow alerts for other districts in Odisha. Fishermen were warned not to go to sea for four days and a Local Alert‑Cautionary Signal (LAC‑III) was hoisted at all Odisha ports.
The system is expected to deepen into a deep depression as it approaches the coastline, prompting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across Odisha, West Bengal, and parts of eastern India for the next 48 hours. Schools in Jagatsinghpur and Mayurbhanj were ordered closed on 27 July. Similar warnings and heavy‑rain alerts were issued for Kerala districts through 1 August. The IMD also forecast widespread heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds across many Indian states, affecting travel and prompting flood and landslide cautions.
