Odisha floods affect over 500,000 people
Heavy rainfall from a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal triggered severe flooding across Odisha, causing several rivers—including the Baitarani, Jalaka, Brahmani and others—to rise above danger levels. The state government, led by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, ordered the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres in multiple districts and launched large‑scale evacuation and relief operations.
More than half a million residents have been affected, with around 30,000 people placed in relief centres. Over 20,000 people have been moved from low‑lying areas, and the National Disaster Response Force, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and fire services have been deployed across the worst‑hit districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj and others. At least three deaths have been reported, including a fire‑services personnel killed by electrocution.
The government held high‑level meetings involving the chief secretary, special relief commissioner and other senior officials to coordinate response, monitor river levels and manage rescue efforts. Relief centres provide food, water and special provisions for women, children and the elderly, while night patrolling and women police personnel have been deployed to ensure safety.
