Odisha floods force evacuation of 70,000 people as rivers swell

Severe flooding triggered by heavy monsoon rains and a deep depression has caused widespread devastation across Odisha. The state government has evacuated over 70,000 people from low-lying areas into 395 relief camps. Flash floods and water-logging have been reported in 13 districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, and Jajpur.

In Balasore, major rivers including the Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga have flowed above danger levels, inundating numerous villages and disrupting road connectivity. The situation was exacerbated by the release of water from the Galudih barrage in Jharkhand. In Mayurbhanj, a breach in the Gangahar River embankment near Kunchibania village has submerged significant stretches of agricultural land and trapped residents.

Casualties and missing persons have been reported. At least three people died in separate wall collapse incidents in Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, and Ganjam. Additionally, four people are reported missing near the Baitarani River. Rescue operations are being conducted by the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), the NDRF, and fire services. Authorities have also temporarily closed tourist sites like Devkund in Similipal National Park due to rising water levels.
