Odisha floods affect 270,000 people across six districts
Heavy rainfall and a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal have triggered severe flooding across six districts in Odisha, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Kendrapara. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reports that approximately 270,000 people across 503 villages have been affected by the rising waters of the Baitarani, Brahmani, Jalaka, Budhabalanga, and Subarnarekha rivers.
Authorities have conducted massive evacuation efforts, moving over 95,000 people to 226 relief camps. These centers are providing essential services such as cooked meals, clean drinking water, medical care, and sanitation. The state government has deployed 118 response teams for rescue and relief operations, with additional teams on standby. To manage the emergency, the state government has cancelled all official leave for government employees.
While some river levels have begun to recede, the Subarnarekha river has crossed its danger mark at Rajghat, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. No human casualties have been reported thus far, which officials attribute to timely evacuations and disaster response measures.
