Odisha floods affect six districts; CM announces Rs 1,000-crore relief package

Severe flooding in Odisha has impacted six districts, including Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Kendrapara. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reported that approximately 9.4 lakh people across 1,381 villages are affected. To manage the crisis, authorities have evacuated more than 200,000 residents, with tens of thousands moved to 291 established relief camps.

In response to the disaster, the state government has announced a Rs 1,000-crore assistance package. This includes financial aid for farmers facing crop damage, support for livestock, fishing equipment, and household essentials. The government has already provided Rs 136 crore in initial assistance. Rescue operations are being conducted by 39 NDRF teams and 51 Fire Service units, with the administration aiming for zero casualties.

During field inspections, the Chief Minister visited inundated areas via boat and motorcycle. While relief efforts are underway, political tension emerged in Jajpur as Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders protested, alleging they were sidelined during the official survey. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall continues to cause rivers like the Baitarani to flow above danger levels in certain areas.
