Odisha hit by heavy rainfall as low-pressure system moves over Bay of Bengal

A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has triggered heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Odisha, India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that six stations recorded very heavy rainfall, with the highest amount of 159 mm measured in Golamunda, Kalahandi district.

Other significant rainfall totals were recorded in Kalahandi, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Baleshwar, and Kendrapada districts. The weather system, which includes a cyclonic circulation extending 7.6 km above mean sea level, has shifted toward the Northwest-Westcentral Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts.

The IMD has issued warnings for squally winds reaching 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, expected over the North and Central Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Bangladesh, West Bengal, Odisha, and North Andhra Pradesh for the next 48 hours. Additionally, rough to very rough sea conditions are anticipated, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
