Odisha Issues Flood Alerts and Crop Compensation Plans as Rivers Rise

The Odisha government has raised flood alerts as water levels in the Mahanadi, Bansadhara and Baitarani rivers continue to climb after prolonged heavy rainfall and upstream inflows. The Hirakud Dam released water through sluice gates, and authorities are monitoring discharge at the Mundali barrage while keeping districts such as Sambalpur, Cuttack, Puri and Bhadrak on high alert. The India Meteorological Department forecasts further rain, prompting ongoing surveillance of river conditions.

In response to the rains, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari ordered an immediate assessment of crop damage across affected districts. Survey results will be submitted promptly, and compensation to farmers is promised within 24 hours of the assessment’s completion. The state reviewed flood preparedness, including evacuation plans, shelter‑home management and the deployment of rescue teams, to mitigate potential impacts on residents and agricultural lands.
