Odisha Police to launch special units for organized crime
Odisha Police is implementing new strategies to combat organized crime, cybercrime, and illegal drug distribution. Director General of Police Vinaytosh Mishra announced plans to establish special units in every police district. These units will operate under the direct control of respective Superintendents of Police to handle sensitive and inter-state investigations that routine local law enforcement may lack the time to manage.
To address cybercrime, the state has established cyber police stations in every district and is preparing to launch a state cyber command coordination centre. Additionally, the department reported an increase in the recovery rate of stolen mobile phones from 7 percent to 27 percent, with a target of 50 percent by the end of December.
Concurrently, the police department has requested the release of 76 crore rupees from the government to restore and maintain CCTV surveillance systems. Currently, hundreds of cameras in police stations and outposts across the state are non-functional. The funding is intended for the Odisha Computer Application Centre to ensure compliance with Supreme Court guidelines regarding round-the-clock surveillance in police facilities.
