Odisha targets 100% utilisation of 45 million tonnes of annual fly ash

The Odisha state government is intensifying efforts to achieve 100 per cent utilisation of fly ash, an industrial by-product generated by thermal power plants. The state currently produces approximately 45 million tonnes of fly ash annually. During the 2025-26 period, Odisha achieved a utilisation rate of 98.63 per cent.

At a meeting convened by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) and chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg, officials discussed strengthening monitoring mechanisms and improving logistics. The government aims to close the remaining gap through stricter enforcement and the expanded use of fly ash-based products.

Five districts—Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, and Dhenkanal—have been identified as priority areas for management. Officials also raised concerns regarding the transportation of fly ash in uncovered vehicles, which can lead to dust pollution and soil or water contamination. Regulations will mandate the use of fully covered vehicles and prescribed procedures for using fly ash in land reclamation and filling abandoned mine voids.
