ODM party faces internal divisions following Raila Odinga's death

One year after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) faces significant internal divisions regarding the party's leadership and political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has attributed the party's struggles to the influence of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) within ODM, arguing that leadership allowed the rival party to become embroiled in internal affairs. This sentiment is echoed by Pauline Odhiambo, Raila's sister, who criticized the leadership for allowing UDA to gain ground in traditional ODM strongholds like Nyanza.

The Odinga family itself appears divided. During commemorations in Bondo, Raila's widow, Ida, received leaders from opposing factions, while his children signaled different paths: Winnie Odinga announced her intention to vie for the Nairobi Senate, aligning with the Linda Mwananchi movement, whereas Raila Junior expressed continued loyalty to ODM. Additionally, Ruth Odinga, Raila's sister and Kisumu MP, has threatened to leave the party, citing a departure from its core principles.

These tensions center on the party's relationship with President William Ruto's administration. One faction, including Raila Junior and Dr. Oburu Oginga, supports cooperation with the government to influence economic and institutional reforms. Conversely, the group involving Winnie Odinga and Senator Edwin Sifuna opposes this partnership.
